Have you ever tried to fast?
If you’re like most I know, you’ve probably tried at least some sort of fast… Intermittent fasting, time-restricted, 5:2, caloric restriction, dinner to breakfast, whatever.
There’s been so much hype about it lately that I’ll bet you’ve even given it a shot.
But here’s the catch. It’s the longer periods of fasting that deliver the greatest benefit. And I don’t mean weeks here. By a longer fast I mean a few days. And for most of us going a few days without food is tough and for some, it’s even dangerous.
How the body responds
There are many things that happen when you fast. Most profound is the subtle shift that takes place inside that we experience in various ways… less hunger, fewer sugar cravings, more energy, better sleep, a leaner body, fat loss, a clearer mind, and a sense of lightness.
When you fast for more than a day or so, the body in all its brilliance shifts into a protective healing mode – cleansing, detoxifying, and marshaling the troops – new stem cells, growth hormones, and various metabolites and genetic modifiers – that rebuild us when food is reintroduced.
Turning down the heat
Not to mention the fact that fasting also calms something called “oxidative stress”, a process that inflames the body and leads to the illnesses we often associate with aging – cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, etc..
Imagine aging without illness or mental decline. That is the potential gift laid out for us when fasting becomes part of our life.
Protecting you
Fasting is a practice that has been used for years to calm epileptic seizures, control blood sugar and insulin overload, and is now being intensely studied for its impact on chronic illness. Countless scientific studies have shown its effectiveness in calming and healing the body.
I’ve been hosting monthly 5-day fasts with the Prolon “Fasting Mimicking Diet” developed by Dr. Valter Longo, one of the top minds in fasting and longevity.
